Devarim: A Covenant Remembered

Shalom and welcome to the Darchei Noam Congregation podcast.

This week’s episode brings us to the opening portion of the book of Deuteronomy—Parashat Devarim.

In Devarim, Moses begins his final address to the children of Israel. As they stand on the threshold of the Promised Land, he recalls their journey, recounts their failures, and renews the covenant. But this is more than a historical review. It is a call to remember, to trust, and to walk in obedience—not out of obligation, but as a response to the steadfast love of the Holy One.

In this teaching, we’ll explore how Deuteronomy is structured not as a law code, but as a covenantal document, patterned after ancient Near Eastern treaties. We’ll see how this pattern underscores the relationship between God and His people—a relationship marked by love, discipline, promise, and faithfulness.

We’ll also consider how this portion speaks to us today as a community called to live in covenant—rooted in the Torah, walking in the footsteps of Yeshua, and preparing to inherit the promises of God.
